Ghibli] Miyazaki festival in Sydney Olympic To: other-announce@nausicaa.net Olympic festival to pay tribute to Japanese animators 10/13/1999 Japan Economic Newswire Copyright Kyodo News International Inc. 1999 SYDNEY, Oct. 13 -- Sydney Olympic organizers said Wednesday that some masters of Japanese animation will be included in the program for the cultural festival at next year's Olympic Games. The Sydney 2000 Olympic Festival will pay tribute to such Japanese animation greats as the late Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Astro Boy and Hayao Miyazaki, director of recent box office movie hit "Princess Mononoke ." Festival director Leo Scofield said that an appearance by blind tenor Andrea Bocelli, an exhibition of works from Leonardo da Vinci, and performances from dances companies and orchestras from around the world will also highlight the program scheduled to run from Aug. 18 to Sept. 30.
