Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro) is Miyazaki's gentle story about two young girls, Satsuke and Mei, and their adventures with the furry friendly forest-spirit Totoro living near their new rural home. The movie is celebration of the beauty of nature, reflection of a gentler age, demonstration of the pure joy of childhood, and many other values. By deliberately steering clear of the violence and nudity prevalent in most contemporary anime (and other media of expression) and by illuminating the lives of ordinary people (with one admittedly extraordinary friend), Miyazaki reintroduces us to to powers of faith, love, and spirituality in this cynical and jaded age.
Despite its lack of "shock value", Tonari no Totoro may be the best- known anime feature to the general public outside of Japan. In 1994, Fox released a dubbed version of the film which remained very faithful to the original version, so now it is available at video stores near you ^_^.
