These CM spots were produced by the Hakuhodo advertising agency for House Foods using the slogan "Let's eat at home", and are the first TV commercial spots directed by Hayao Miyazaki. For the summer version of this ad campaign there are four 15-second spots named, "Playing House", "Errand", "Alley", and "Advertising Car", plus a 30-second spot using clips from both "Errand" and "Playing House." All of these spots, plus the House Foods - Winter spots directed by Yoshiyuki Momose, are available in Japan on the Ghibli ga Ippai Special Short Short R2 DVD.
Miyazaki evokes an old-timey nostalgic feeling in these summertime spots using Showa 30 (1955) era settings for the visuals, along with his lyrics for the song Mother's Photograph, which he produced separately for CD release on the Toshiba EMI label.
Mother's Photograph was written by Joe Hisaishi, and sung by Tsunehiko Kamijou (the voice of Gonza in Princess Mononoke and the Mama Aiuto Boss in Porco Rosso). The BVHE documentary DVD Hayao Miyazaki Produces a CD features a live concert performance of the song recorded at the Studio Ghibli Museum.
