Kiki's Delivery Service (English book)
Price: $18.95 USD (hardcover)
Price: $6.95 USD (paperback)
Notes: The English text is written at about an eight- to ten-year-old's reading level. There is no overarching plot; the book is episodic, a series of "adventures" Kiki has in her new town of Koriko. She visits the beach for the first time, in a borrowed (but yes, black!) swimsuit, and has her broom stolen; she delivers a love poem; she carries a package to a tramp-steamer's captain, and helps him to preserve his cargo; she helps the town to ring in the New Year. It's great fun to see the origins of some of the details included in the movie ("Tombo", we're told, is Japanese for "dragonfly"; his friends nicknamed him that for his huge glasses).
According to the "About the Author" blurb at the book's front, Eiko Kadono lives in the city of Kamakura, and is currently working on a fourth Kiki novel.
This edition includes the original illustrations by Akiko Hayashi, but has a new cover illustration credited to John Perlock.
