Obtaining Screening Permission

Public performance (generally defined as anything outside of a home) of a film requires clearance from the current rights holder. We hope this page helps groups and organizations interested in screening Studio Ghibli films navigate the often murky maze.

Why is 35mm (Almost) the Only Available Format?

Studio Ghibli has not granted DVD/BD screening rights to GKids. The rights to Howl's Moving Castle are with Disney and non-35mm formats are available through the Swank clearinghouse although we're not sure why Tales from Earthsea and Ponyo aren't available. Update: As of 2105, mass 35mm print production for motion picture releases has shut down with the exception of a few specialized labs. DCP is now the format most exhibitors can expect to receive. 35mm prints will generally continue to be available until they are no longer in show-able condition.

Individual films can be requested after the GKids traveling retrospective winds down at the end of 2012.

Can I Use an Umbrella License?

Maybe. The umbrella license from the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation allows for the use of any legally obtained format but in the US Disney and subsidiaries are not included in the Libraries and Schools category. Terms and conditions differ in other countries, consult the MPLC website for details.
