Previous and Next links on some pages

What are these? --nihonTalk 00:32, 1 February 2008 (CST)

Added the BackAndForth extension as an additional browsing option. It's simple to disable if we decide it adds too much clutter.
--LLin 10:48, 1 February 2008 (CST)
I could see it being useful to browse around the main pages on the site, but it seems odd to have it on pages like the Team Ghiblink page. --nihonTalk 19:50, 1 February 2008 (CST)

2008-04-23 - Upload page broken?

I was just going to do some more work and the upload page seems to be broken? Mrgazpacho 06:59, 23 April 2008 (CDT)

Oh hang on... the link in the toolbox on the front page (http://www.nausicaa.net/wiki/Special:Upload) is correct; other pages link to "http://www.nausicaa.net/wiki/Wikipedia:Upload" which doesn't work. Mrgazpacho 07:25, 23 April 2008 (CDT)
There's some strange skin and/or php interaction that's causing the Wikipedia namespace to appear. I added a redirect as a quick fix. --LLin 11:36, 23 April 2008 (CDT)

Categories

As usual, taxonomy continues to be my greatest bugbear... for one-off things like the Lasseter-San, Arigato and Studio Ghibli Museum DVDs, do we need to bother creating a whole Main Page > Availability > Video > Actual DVD info page, or should we just cut straight to the Main Page > DVD? Mrgazpacho 10:52, 25 April 2008 (CDT)

The level of redirection would be annoying. If there's only videos I say just point directly to the DVD page since, well, very little availability of the other goods. ^_^ FYI, in the process of re-categorizing the shorts. --LLin 10:57, 25 April 2008 (CDT)
OK - although in the Museum's case, I just remembered that they have an English-language book(let) so I'll need a main availability page anyway. But I get the general approach to keep it as simple as possible. Mrgazpacho 11:03, 25 April 2008 (CDT)
  • For the People category, is there a way to categorize a page down to a specific person? I just added the new Italian book on Takahata, and I'm able to put in the People category, but only to that level. Is there a way to see Takahata on a page as a category? Eishagishi 21:12, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Edit: I think you want to add a link to the "Category:Isao Takahata" category page Mrgazpacho 23:41, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Hi Chris,
That's what I presently have on that book page Art of Emotion, The (Italian). But the link acts like there is no Isao Takahata category. Same thing on the category page - it looks like the category for Isao Takahata hasn't been created yet. An article for him shows up under the People category but that's it. I've tried various alternate ways of typing the link (first name first, last name first, etc.) but so far no joy.Eishagishi 02:03, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
I just created the Isao Takahata Category page. It works much the same way as any other page, except if you use the template "catmore" it fills in all the details automatically. Mrgazpacho 03:38, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip Chris. I went ahead and created a Kazuo Oga Category page.
--Eishagishi 01:25, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Proposing a sub-category name change - Takahata films becomes Isao Takahata films for uniformity. No pages presently use this sub-category, though I would like to use it for the Art of Emotion, The (Italian) book.
    --Eishagishi 21:30, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good. I believe it was originally setup that way since there's only one Takahata in the Ghibli univerise. Then again there was only one Miyazaki for awhile until Goro hit the scene so expanding the category name makes sense.
  • --LLin 15:21, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
  • More of my difficulties with categories - I'm trying to create a Kazuo Oga films category using the catmore template. But the resultant category lists only the pages, not the subcategory for the one film (so far) by Kazuo Oga. The categories for the film itself Nights of Taneyamagahara look correct and ready to have the new cat built, but so far no joy. I'd like the new cat to look like the Isao Takahata films cat. Obviously I'm not doing something correctly here.
    --Eishagishi 02:08, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
  • Hi Paul;
What you want is to create the desired Category (not a simple "page") named "Nights of Taneyamagahara" which is itself in the Category named "Kazuo Oga films". I'm sure you can figure out how to link up everything after that (^_^)
    -- Mrgazpacho 03:49, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again for the help! Took awhile, but I think I've got it.
--Eishagishi 22:36, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
  • Another two category questions - first, I've been working on the Kazuo Oga doc 'Ghibli Artisan'. I'm assuming it should be categorized under 'Non-Ghibli films' (like 'Lasseter-san Arigatou' and 'Yanagawa Canals') even though all of these are released under one of the Studio Ghibli banners. Second, should 'Ghibli Artisan' be categorized under 'Kazuo Oga films'? He didn't direct this doc, but it is about him. Ah, taxonomy!
    --Eishagishi 22:36, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
Yes and no. For example Lasseter-San, Arigato doesn't have a Hayao Miyazaki category. --LLin 03:58, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Japanese

For cut-n-pasteable Japanese characters, I found it easy to go to CDJapan, look up the DVD in English and then click on a link (hopefully most pages have a similar one) to go to a page with Japanese information. Mrgazpacho 16:00, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Additional video page URLs needed?

Looks like I need a couple of URLs for some new-to-the-site Porco VCD listings. There is a second Chinese-language PAL VCD, and a Korean-language one that I would like to add. Both are legit releases AFAIK. Please take a look at Porco Rosso (videos) for the entries I'm working on. Need some suggestions for naming too while we're at it.

Also, I can't seem to find any listings for a German-language Porco VHS release. Can you point me in the right direction? TIA!
Eishagishi 18:55, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Hi Paul;
The Korean URL looks OK, but it looks like "PAL" is the name of the company for the second Chinese VCD... is it also by IVL? Perhaps you could name the company if it is different, or move the "IVL" URL to be "IVL - NTSC" or some other distinguishing characteristic... Mrgazpacho 04:11, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
  • I believe the German VHS is a typo, I'm pretty sure it's just a DVD release. I agree with Chris' suggestions on naming, the Korean one is ok while the Chinese one needs a differentiating note somewhere. --LLin 04:57, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Deleting orphaned pages

Couple of things - one question and one point out:

  • Q: How do I delete orphaned pages?
  • You can delete an orphaned page by using the delete "tab" at the top of the page... Mrgazpacho 10:36, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Chris. Looks like I don't have that privilege. I've got a short list of mistakenly made Porco pages to delete...
Eishagishi 21:12, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
If you list them out one of us can give 'em the boot. Or if you're ready for the leap to administrator I think you'll be able to use the power wisely. ^_^
--LLin 05:33, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Administrator powers... MwaHahahahaha... 'er, sorry. (^_^);;
--Eishagishi 01:25, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, rolled back the spam

Kana in music track listings

Do we mind having the kana titles as part of track listings for CDs? Specifically, I can add the kana titles to the A Music Box Heals You page if that's not cluttering things up too much.
Eishagishi 05:11, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

I like 'em - as a matter of fact, I've gone and grabbed a few myself from CDJapan, even though I have no actual Japanese knowledge. -- Mrgazpacho 05:16, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
Got the idea from an existing page while looking for the template. I think it adds a nice touch and should be present on all soundtracks. --LLin 05:57, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Anonymous editing

As you can see, we got hit fairly hard today. Do we want to consider Nihon's advice and eliminate anonymous editing again (for now anyway)? --Eishagishi 19:45, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Re-activated the login requirement. Yay for people making life harder. Unless the captcha has been recently cracked someone is putting in the correct details then not bothering to add links? Quite bizarre.
--LLin 04:40, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
It's not just that they are not bothering to add links - you can see the recent pattern of auto-vandalism has been to take the first "edit" section of a page, and replace it with a short random string. It's even more subtle than that - they don't touch a previously-vandalised "edit" section and move on to the next one. Sounds like a programming exercise, but I'm not sure if someone's bot-ted up this purely for vandalism purposes, or whether it's a testing precursor to actually adding spam links.
p.s. Some captchas are known to be breakable in a trivial amount of time...

Hiroyuki Morita

Hi, I've been reading Nausicaa.net for years and have some news. I'm studying in Japan right now for the month of July at the Tokyo Film Center in Tokyo and today a special guest came to lecture - Hiroyuki Morita, director of The Cat Returns. I asked him a couple of questions about Ghibli as did other students in the class and I would be glad to e-mail you what he said. I'm the webmaster of a large Pokemon website called PokeBeach.com, so I'm not just some random guy. :p He talked about the Cat Returns, Haru's character design, some stuff about Ghibli behind-the-scenes, Miyazaki's "retirements," etc. If you want me to type up something just shoot an email to wpm@pokebeach.com. Sorry I've never edited a wiki before, but my name is SurferJon here.

Credits

I had been thinking about formatting the credits for several Miyazaki Ghibli features which have somehow been omitted from the new page. Since I am such a geek for credits, I was wondering if I could be appointed the job. Now I'm not experienced in using formats, but I'm eager to learn. Thanks. -JTurner

No appointment necessary, go ahead and try out some stuff in your user section. The format from the HTML site is merely a suggestion and the historic reference, not the end-all of credit layout. --LLin 05:27, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Music downloads

Question - As far as a know, the new theme song single Arrietty's Song is the first "official" digital download item offered by Studio Ghibli. My question is since it is not a CD or CD Single (yet) what do we call this media type? A "digital download"? Seems wordy. Or use the file type extensions for the PC and Mac iTunes versions? Or some other way? Sorry, I've never bought music downloads before (all of the music on my PC is ripped from CDs I own) so I'm totally clueless.
--Eishagishi 05:59, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

  • I'd say "Digital Download" is still the best. The data in the "media type" field of the Soundtrack template could be used to specify file format.
    -- Mrgazpacho 07:07, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
I agree with the man from down under. Someday "DD" will be as ubiquitous as "CD" but not yet. Besides the file type "Media type" could also hold the bitrate and encoding scheme (CBR/VBR).
--LLin 19:00, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Very well. Category "Digital Download" shall make its GhibliWiki debut shortly.

Merging manga pages

I have two questions:
Nausicaä pages in category Category:Manga is orphaned (no main pages like Nausicaä_of_the_Valley_of_the_Wind_(manga) links it). Also, different volumes differs only in ISBN, date, etc. I ported Nausicaä_(Manga_Availability) to Wiki, and now I put images for it. Maybe, merge this pages in single, use Nausicaä_(Manga_Availability) as start point?
I intend to port manga cover images from old static site, categorize them as "Manga covers", and insert on page first volume cover image and link to Category:Manga covers. Will this correct?
Next: Server always returns *.txt files with content-encoding="UTF-8", so I replaced some script files with converted versions. UTF8 format is also more convenient for non-Japanese readers than JIS. (Special:Contributions/Zart). I can convert other scripts/lyrics to utf8. Must I add hiragana lyrics to English/romaji files? In utf8 format this will be easy and it will increase file size just a little.--Zart 16:07, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm not seeing the orphan pages on Category:Manga, all of the Nausicaa links appear to be pointing to existing pages. Could you explain further? Using the ported Nausicaä_(Manga_Availability) couldn't hurt. I think you're proposing to add covers like on the old static page and have the covers linked to another page? I feel the covers don't need a separate category and can be used as standard images.
Converting the text files to UTF-8 even if they don't have hiragana is fine. As you mentioned it's what the server is returning and maybe someone will add the lyrics in the future. Thanks for the help!
--LLin 03:51, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
"Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Animage Comics 1)"->What links here). Only next issue's page links to it, and that's all. Pages in cycle (1-7) form a closed circle with links from previous to next, and there is no outer page with links to them.
Next, maybe port from wikipedia templates Infobox animanga and Graphic novel list? And merge pages about issues to single page about manga with issue details table (isbn, date, etc.)?
I propose upload cover images and not insert them in pages ("orphan"). Instead, I propose create category, add images to category and insert in page Nausicaä_(Manga_Availability) link to category. Reader will follow link and choose image. Or it will be better create page Cover Samples instead of category and add images to it?
If in some language version of lyrics hiragana is exist, must I copy it to another language versions?
--Zart 20:00, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the example, I now see the closed loop. I'm personally like individual pages for works instead of one big page for everything but please go ahead and create your suggestion, it may be appropriate and I'd like to see what it'll look like. Could you link an example for your lyrics question?
--LLin 16:59, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
Media:Laputa_script_spanish_utf8.txt have kana, Media:Laputa_script_english.txt have not. This is often with lyrics: some language have kana, some not (maybe, because with not-Unicode encoding it is impossible have extended-latin and kana in single document).
Maybe create separate pages for all manga series ("VIZ Select Comics", "VIZ Graphic Novel", "VIZ Perfect Collection", "Animage Comics Wide-Ban, 'Kaze no Tani no Nausika'" etc.)?--Zart 18:28, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
Changing all of the text files to UTF-8 should solve the problem as you noted in a previous comment. Breaking the pages by series is a great idea.

Reference notes

Wow. Been a while since I've been here. I just added another review for 'From Up on Poppy Hill'. In posting it, I put in some ref notes, but when I put in the reflist template at the bottom of the article, I don't see the notes. The ref link numbers are showing up where I put them, and they are clickable, but the list at the end isn't coming up. Am I doing something not quite right?
--Eishagishi 23:47, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Ack, I'll need to do some testing to figure out what's going on, is there a page with a working reference list or all they all busted?
--LLin 13:40, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Oops, me too ack. The other pages that use refs are working - they use <References/> to list the refs instead of a reflist template. I switched to this and my review refs are now working. (^_^);;
--Eishagishi 19:12, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Another Q re references - noticing that the references are only viewable to me when I'm logged in. If I'm not logged in and just viewing a page with refs, I get an error message. Is this a 'feature'?
--Eishagishi 21:34, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
It's not a bug, it's a feature! Gah, MediaWiki should get an update but we can't jump to the latest version due to dependencies. I'll be looking into what the highest version we can jump to.

Disabling account creation

Seems like the spammers can still create accounts.
--Eishagishi 10:06, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Weird, when I access the account page it correctly displayed a notice. I'll wait for the next batch to arrive and figure out their vector. --LLin 07:21, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Prince of the Sun: The Great Adventure of Hols

Noticed that there is no link to this one from the Main Page. Would like to add a link to it from the 'Earlier Works/Other Films' page. I'm assuming these earlier films will all get separate pages eventually?
--Eishagishi (talk) 16:43, 27 April 2013 (CDT)

That's a good idea. On the old site they were lumped into one category as there wasn't enough individual content for different pages.
--LLin (talk) 21:05, 6 May 2013 (CDT)
OK. When I get a chance, I'll add a link and 'TV Guide' style short description for Hols to the 'Earlier Works/Other Films' page.
--Eishagishi (talk) 13:23, 7 May 2013 (CDT)
I can help with adding it to the Main Page, too, if you wish. I just finished reorganizing it a bit to (hopefully) make it easier to navigate and not so overwhelming (I think the collapsed works sections help a lot with that). --nihonTalk 11:05, 10 May 2013 (CDT)
What ever works for you guys! I just feel it should be linked somewhere, since it was such a milestone. Thanks! ^_^

to my sister book for sale

Hi, I was editing and noticed that at the bottom of the page To My Sister, it says to contact the editors if the book becomes available for sale. Well I found that it's on sale on ebay right now. [1] --Abound14 (talk) 17:07, 21 June 2013 (CDT)

Template PictureBox, Picture width, High-Resolution scans and ISBN format

I just noticed MediaWiki doesn't have a private message thingy so it goes here. I edited the Template "PictureBox" so we can specify the image width (as we already can with the MediaWikis own "Image:" feature. I made it backwards-compatible so that all uses before my change are still working as before (old: Kiki_Ghibli_Ekonte_5_Jacket.jpg - new: Kiki_Ghibli_Ekonte_5_Jacket.jpg). This change was required after I started uploading high-resolution scans of some "The Art of" and "Storyboards" that spanned across the "whole" site.

I'd suggest we use a given width for various images. The height is always calculated automatically based on the width. What about 300px width for the ones inside the Infobox and 200px for those inside the normal page? See Studio Ghibli Storyboards Collection 5: Kiki's Delivery Service for example. The advantage would be the Infobox will always have the same width.

I also wanted to ask if doing these high resolution scans is ok (server storage / bandwidth).

Another tool I found really useful is this ISBN converter that converts from ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 or vice-versa and also does the correct hypernation! http://pcn.loc.gov/isbncnvt.html (Website of The Library of Congress)
--an3k (talk) 13:44, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

No issues with storage or bandwidth so please use the high-res images as they become available. The pixel widths suggestion is also reasonable, thanks!

--LLin (talk) 21:42, 11 August 2018 (UTC)

State of the site?

I am noticing errors all over the site and have for years. Uploading seems broken. The news hasn't been updated since Takahata's passing. There's still no SSL encryption for the site. It feels like a neglected ghost town covered in cobwebs.

I've only occasionally been making edits and content additions over the last several years. Lately there's been a lot of new things happening, but I see that uploading new images is having issues, and that the domain "nausicaa.net" no longer exists. I hope this site can continue its mission in some way/form or another. Are any of the bureaucrats or admins still around? --Eishagishi (talk) 07:11, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

I'm here. though I don't have SSH access to the site server so I can't fix the issues. If Rachel Blackman (or someone else who can do it) can give me that access, I can go fix things. --nihonTalk 00:12, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
